A Doha Criminal Court is hearing a case in which an Egyptian expatriate, who works as a Customs clearance agent, and his Indian manager are accused of trying to bribe a Customs officer at the Abu Samra border post.

According to a report in local Arabic daily Arrayah, the accused have been charged with offering a sum of QR20,000 to the Abu Samra Customs officer to facilitate the entry of cargo with Customs charges lower than the stipulated amount.

The officer testified before the court that he was offered a sum of QR20,000 in exchange for facilitating the entry of the said goods. He reported the matter to his administration, which instructed him to pretend that he was accepting the bribe offer.

The officer agreed to meet the Customs clearance agents at a local cafe, where he received QR8,000 as advance payment for the deal.

The meeting was under the surveillance of the police.

The court was also told that the accused had two cargoes, which they tried to bring into the country without paying the due Customs charges.
