A workshop on ways to enhance interaction with the international human rights treaty bodies opened in Doha yesterday.
The two-day workshop is organised by the Doha-based Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions in co-operation with the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab region.  
The two bodies will organise another workshop on ways to combat hate speech and promote tolerance on December 22 and 23.
The workshops will discuss ways and mechanisms to strengthen the interaction of national human rights institutions, non-governmental organisations and various stakeholders with international human rights treaty bodies, with a focus on ways to activate the recommendations adopted by these bodies, the exchange of experiences in this regard, and explore ways of co-operation and future prospects of interaction.
About 25 trainees from employees of the national human rights institutions, the members of the network in Qatar, Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco, Jordan, Oman, Comoros, Djibouti, Mauritania are taking part in the workshop along with other participants from civil society organisations and the Arab Human Rights Committee.


Ministry recalls Honda vehicles
The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has announced a recall of several Honda models, including 2007-2011 CR-V, Civic and City and 2007-2012 Jazz, over faulty driver airbags.
The recall is being carried out in collaboration with Doha Marketing Services Company (Domasco), dealer of Honda vehicles in Qatar.
The campaign falls within the framework of the MEC’s ongoing efforts to protect consumers and ensure that automobile dealers follow up on vehicle defects and repairs.
The ministry will co-ordinate with the dealer to follow up on maintenance and repair works and communicate with customers to ensure that the necessary repairs are carried out.
It has urged consumers to report violations to its Consumer Protection and Anti-Commercial Fraud Department through the hotline (16000), e-mail ([email protected]), Twitter (@MEC_Qatar), Instagram (MEC_Qatar) and the mobile app for Android and iOS (MEC_Qatar).

Driver’s body to be repatriated today
The body of Johnson Pappan (51), an expatriate Indian driver from Saudi Arabia who died on Friday in Qatar, will be repatriated today.
Pappan, a native of Odanavattam, near Kottarakkara in southern Kerala, died while driving a goods laden trailer from Saudi Arabia. The death occurred apparently from a heart attack, a few kilometres after crossing into Qatar through the Abu Samra border, inquiries found.
M Ali, a humanitarian worker in the Indian community said a person has been deputed by the company that employed Pappan in Saudi Arabia and he is being helped to send the body home today. The body will be flown to Thiruvananathapuram this evening, he added.

GCC lawyers conference concludes

The annual GCC lawyers and arbitrators conference concluded yesterday.
The participants recommended establishing a unified legislation for lawyers in the GCC. They also agreed that holding the conference on an annual basis has become a necessity. They also praised a decision made by Saudi Arabia to establish a national authority for lawyers.  
The participants expressed their thanks to HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani for their support to the conference.

Qatar Petroleum honours graduates
Qatar Petroleum held a celebration in honour of a new group of graduates who joined the organisation for work after obtaining their technical and academic requirements for diploma, B.Sc. and Master’s degrees in various specialisations.
QP honoured a total of 112 graduates in 27 specialisations covering law, maritime science, information, different engineering and technical specialisations, management, safety, environment, fire extinguishing, finance science, and geology. The graduates included 5 who obtained Master’s degrees, 74 B.Sc. holders and 33 graduates with  different technical certificates who completed their studies in Qatar, the US, the UK, France, Australia and Oman.

Shortest  day today
The winter solstice will occur today, marking the shortest day of the year and the astronomical start of the winter season, the Qatar Met department has said.
The mercury levels will be around their regular average during this time of the year. The minimum temperature is expected to range between 15C and 18C and the maximum between 22C and 24C, the weather report states.
Today, the minimum and maximum temperatures in the country are likely to be 14C and 25C, respectively, with the forecast for Doha being 19C and 25C.
