The Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Centre (QICDRC) has welcomed a French delegation of economists, jurists and other legal professionals.
The delegation, headed by Benoit Renaud, president of the Conseil Supérieur du Notariat, and accompanied by M Eric Chevallier, French ambassador to Qatar, was welcomed to the QICDRC by its president, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers.
Speaking in French, Lord Phillips welcomed the delegation and the French ambassador to the QICDRC and gave them an introduction to the work of the centre, commenting on the role of the Civil and Commercial Court and Regulatory Tribunal in resolving disputes arising out of the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC).
Lord Phillips also spoke on Qatar’s experience of embracing international arbitration and the challenges that have arisen in Qatar as a result.
Speaking at the event, QICDRC CEO Faisal Rashid al-Sahouti said: “The QICDRC has provided expert advice and assistance in relation to proposed legislative reforms concerning international arbitration in Qatar, which we expect to come to fruition in 2016.”
The delegation, which had earlier been to Abu Dhabi to attend a civil code forum, was particularly interested in comparing the different approaches and services offered by the various dispute resolution institutions in the region.
The delegation listened to and participated in a number of short seminars relating to the state of the economy in the GCC, establishment of the QFC, the need for regional and international dispute resolution centres and the role of international litigation and arbitration in the GCC.
