The body of an Indian expatriate, which had been in the Hamad General Hospital mortuary for more than 40 days, was repatriated to his native place, thanks to the active intervention of a couple of humanitarian workers and the support of the Indian embassy.

The deceased, identified as RT, 55, by community sources, came to Qatar only a few years ago after a stint in the UK and had run into financial troubles after he started a contracting business. He died of a heart attack at his house in Al Murra area.

Inquiries found that RT had faced as many as five travel bans as he had defaulted on repaying a loan to a local bank among other issues. Some of the cheques he issued to his customers had bounced owing to lack of funds in his bank account. Frustrated at the developments, he was reportedly keeping aloof from his friends for some time.

All his desperate attempts to go to India did not work owing to the travel bans. RT has left behind his wife and two children, in Thiruvananathapuram district of Kerala.

Humanitarian activists K M Ali and Abdul Salam thanked Indian embassy and Ministry of Interior for helping them in the repatriation of the body.
