Jassim bin Ali al-Attiyah’s Rassan came up with an impressive run for a convincing win in the Al Kharrarah Cup, a conditions race for local purebred Arabians, at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club yesterday.
The five-year-old Amer progeny raced to his second victory this season six lengths ahead of Umm Qarn’s Raedah.
Jassim al-Ghazali’s charge had won the Al Rumailah Cup, also on dirt like yesterday, last month with Harry Bentley at the helm. Yesterday, however, it was Tadgh O’Shea riding the grey horse.
Alban de Mieulle’s charge Raedah, a winner in the the Al Rayyan Owners Cup - Local Purebred Arabian last month, finished ahead of Hassan al-Matwi’s Majd Al Uraiq.
Earlier, in the Al Khor Cup, a purebred Arabian conditions race over six furlongs, al-Matwi found success with his six-year-old bay horse La Hoor, with Marco Monteriso riding him to victory ahead of Al Jeryan Stud’s AJS Qahir and Ba’sil, being ridden by Richard Mullen in the colours of HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Khalifa al-Thani.
In the Thoroughbred Maiden Cup event, a Fegentri race, Debbie Mountain-trained Markstein, owned by Hassan Ali Abdulmalik, was ridden to his first victory by Alexis Lemer. The three-year-old colt was followed by Hussain Ali Bukanan’s Crisscrossed, who finished second for the second time in a span of a week.
Ahmed Hassan al-Malki al-Jehani’s Dubawi mare Dubawi Coast was third.
Crisscrossed was ridden by Swedish jockey Andreas Dalbark while Dubawi Coast had Frenchman Gonzague Cottreau, who is second in the Fegentri standings, at her helm.
In the other Fegentri Thoroughbred Maiden Cup race, Lemer won with al-Ghazali-schooled Mutadhamen Mishal bin Ali al-Attiyah.
Patrick Deno and Dalbark rode Khalid Yahya al-Khusaai’s filly Rock Heroine and Hassan Ali Abdulmalik’s King of Doha to second and third place respectively.
Adri de Vries rode Al Qassam, owned by Ali Thamer al-Mehshadi, to victory in the day’s opening race, Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate, while Ibrahim Hassan al-Malki al-Jehani colt Go For Broke won the Class 4 Thoroughbred Handicap event.
