The International Coordinating Committee for National Human Rights Institutions (ICC) which is based in Geneva has awarded Qatar National Human Rights Committee (QNHRC) ‘A status’, for the second time in a row for a period of five years ending by the end of 2020.
In a press statement on this occasion, Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri, Chairman of the National Human Rights Committee said that this status is granted to national institutions which enjoy impartiality, independency and credibility.
“The National Human Rights Committee is one of the few institutions in the Arab world and the Middle East that have been awarded such a high status, Dr al-Marri said adding that obtaining the highest status is an achievement which would not come out of the blue”.
He pointed out that the ICC looks at a number of terms, conditions and practices that need to be provided by each national human rights institutions in order to be classified and approved.
Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri said that the international co-ordinating body has looked at not less than 20 standards and measures within what is known as the “Paris Principles”, the most important of which are conditions of membership, independency, and immunity, infrastructure and staffing
