Al Shaheen oilfield, offshore Qatar.

Maersk Oil will be showcasing its technical energy solutions at the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) as principal sponsor and exhibitor of the industry event, hosted by Qatar Petroleum.
The IPTC’s return to Doha marks the continued importance of Qatar as a hub for sharing knowledge and expertise in oil and gas.
“Maersk Oil’s prominence in the IPTC’s programme reflects the company’s commitment to supporting the long- term development of Qatar’s energy industry,” the company has said in a release.
Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ) managing director Lewis Affleck said, “Maersk Oil has built an international reputation for turning marginal fields into commercial successes, such as Qatar’s Al Shaheen field, which was originally deemed uneconomic for development and today produces 40% of the nation’s oil. It’s a challenging time for our industry currently, yet as an agile, innovative and cost-efficient organisation we continue to deliver the best technical solutions and the greatest value to our partners. So we’re pleased to have the opportunity to share our expertise at this forum.”
Maersk Oil’s chief financial officer, Graham Talbert will also sharing insight into how the company is creating value, despite a low oil price environment, as a speaker in the ‘Investing in energy and optimising costs for the long term’ session.
Despite the economic downturn, as part of the Maersk Group, one of the world’s “largest conglomerates”, Maersk Oil is currently pursuing “profitable, long term growth” by investing in new acquisitions.
Maersk Oil has some 12 technical presentations within the IPTC technical programme, several of which are co-authored by Maersk Oil Qatar and Qatar Petroleum and which highlight the successful technologies and approaches used to successfully develop Qatar’s Al Shaheen field, one of the world’s most complex.
By working closely together with QP for the past 20 years, Maersk Oil has become “specialists” in Al Shaheen, developing a unique understanding this unique field and how to maximise long-term oil recovery safely and sustainably from this important national asset.
Maersk Oil retains its commitment to developing Qatar for generations to come, by again sponsoring the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Young Person’s Activity programme, which seeks to attract young people to pursue fulfilling careers in the energy industry.
In Qatar, Maersk Oil is focused on developing the industry leaders of the future. It offers a number of dedicated development programmes to Qataris to support its strategic aim to increase both the number of nationals in employment, but also the number in leadership, specialist and offshore roles. It also supports a number of leadership programmes as part of its social investment activities.
Speaking further about the company’s aims and successes in attracting and developing the next generation will be Maersk Oil Qatar’s head (Human Resources) Natalie Rush in the ‘Who will run the energy industry in the future’ panel session at the IPTC.
