An urgent relief campaign launched by Qatar Charity (QC) benefited some 3,000 people affected by the recent Cyclone Chapala in Yemen.
QC’s field team is currently assessing the situation and evaluating the damage in order to prepare for another relief campaign soon. The campaign is aimed at offering aid and rebuilding what has been
destroyed.
In a statement yesterday, QC said it was the first charitable society to reach the affected people in Socotra and other parts of Yemen.
Since last Saturday, the relief campaign has been in effect, with 500 families in Socotra, Hadramaut, Al Mahrah, and Shabwah receiving aid.
QC has distributed food baskets to the families as part of the campaign. Each basket contains supplies sufficient for a month, such as flour, rice, sugar, cooking oil, baby milk, legumes and others. In addition, the families have received four blankets, four mattresses, four pieces of clothes for
children and kitchen tools.
While one team is evaluating the damage, other QC teams are offering aid to those hit by Cyclone Chapala on the island. QC is working in co-operation with local organisations as a first step to launch an urgent relief campaign that includes distributing relief supplies and reconstruction plans.
Several people were killed and extensive damage was caused to property after cyclones Chapala and Megh hit the island of Socotra within a span of a few days. Statistics also show that some 10,000 people have been displaced.
Children’s clothes were given away as part of the campaign.
