Row over rent upsets senior Congress leaders
A dispute over rent at the 50-year-old offices of the Congress Party has irked its senior members in western Pudukottai district.
The party has been functioning from the rented office located on Keelaraja Veedi owned by Muthuvel Chettiar. Trouble started when the party backtracked on rents after Muthuvel died some years ago. His son Somasundaram too could not collect the rent.
Finally Somasundaram went to court which ordered the Congress to vacate the premises. The party defied the court orders and continued functioning without paying the rent.
Finally an angry Somasundaram took a police team to seal the premises but was kept out by dozens of Congressmen who had surrounded the building.
Retired Congress leaders were irritated that this petty dispute was tarnishing the party’s public image.
