Nearly six months after opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Salahuddin Ahmed was traced in India, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) director general (DG) Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed yesterday said the BGB is investigating how he intruded into the neighbouring country.
“We’re probing whether he (Salahuddin) crossed the border due to the negligence of duty of BGB members,” he said while talking to reporters at Chuadanga-6 BGB headquarters in Chuadanga district town.
General Aziz said it was primarily confirmed that the BNP leader entered India illegally.
Remaining missing for around two months, Salahuddin was found in Shillong, the capital of northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya on May 11. He was arrested for entering India without any valid documents.
He has been staying in a rented house in Shillong after a local court granted him bail in a case filed against him on charge of trespassing.
Salahuddin’s family claimed that he was taken blind-folded on a vehicle and then dumped in the Indian territory. They said those who had abducted him might have done this only cover up his captivity in the Bangladesh capital or elsewhere.
He was found in a dazed state by the Meghalaya police and he introduced himself as a former Bangladeshi minister and lawmaker.
