The students, professors, and nurses at the University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) have donated a large quantity of various school supplies and toys to children living in refugee camps in Jordan. The supplies sent to the children included chalkboards, notebooks, storybooks, pencils, backpacks, games and more.
The UCQ aid donation, aimed at contributing to global relief efforts for Iraqi and Syrian refugee children, was organised in co-ordination with DHL Express Qatar, which collected and shipped the materials free of charge under its GoTeach “Back to School Drive” programme.
“University of Calgary in Qatar has a very diverse community of students, faculty and staff from Qatar and all over the world. One attribute we all share is our eagerness to make a positive difference for those in need,” noted Lucille Wittstock, Associate Dean (Academic) at UCQ. “Collaborating with engaged local organisations like DHL to support such a worthy cause dovetails with the nursing profession’s intent of improving lives.” UCQ also spearheads initiatives that contribute to community health in Qatar.
This fall, the university’s nursing students are creating and implementing health and wellness projects to benefit 400 predominantly Qatari students of Awsaj Academy, a school for children with learning challenges.
The student body is also very active outside the classroom, with many participating in UCQ clubs that organise environmental, health, and humanitarian efforts.
University of Calgary in Qatar, Qatar’s exclusive provider of nursing education, develops the country’s nursing leaders in its undergraduate and graduate programmes.
In November 2015, UCQ will graduate 76 students from its Bachelor of Nursing (BN) programmes. An additional nine students will graduate from the Master of Nursing (MN) programme, becoming the first MN graduates educated in Qatar, for Qatar.
