The average annual growth in water production was 7.8% in the four years between 2010 and 2014.
In a report, the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has said though the annual average growth is 7.8% during the four years, the growth rate fell below 7% in the last two years.
While it was only 6.3% in 2013, compared to the previous year, this rose marginally to 6.5% the following year.
What is interesting is that the growth rate was only 0.2% in 2014 in spite of a massive growth of more than 100,000 in the country’s population last year compared to 2013. It is understood that the general water and electricity consumption in the country came down in the last two years owing to Kahramaa’s ongoing conservation and preservation campaign of “Tarsheed”, started in April 2012.
The latest announced growth rate in water production was much lower to the period between 2009 and 2010 when the growth was 9.6%, it was pointed out.
The report also informed that the annual non-revenue water (NRW) generated in the country is falling steadily.
The NRW is the difference between the system input volume and water sold to customers. The NRW, it said, was reduced from a high of 25 % in 2009 to 21.2% in 2014. As per the figures released by the authorities the figure went up only between 2012 and 2013, when the rise was 20.5% in 2013 compared to 19.6% in 2012.
Fight breaks out on ice-skating rink
A number of people were injured in a fight that broke out recently between two groups of people over an incident at the ice-skating rink of a shopping centre in Doha, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.
Witnesses said the fight started after a young man stopped suddenly while skating and, in the process, some ice shavings fell on a woman in the vicinity.
The woman’s husband intervened and started arguing with the skater, accusing him of behaving inappropriately. The young man tried to explain that what happened was unintentional but it did not help and matters soon turned worse as the two started hitting each other.
The two men left the place after a while, but the fight resumed within minutes with friends and acquaintances of both joining in. The fight reportedly continued for another 45-50 minutes before the police arrived and brought the situation under control, the report noted, adding that medical teams were also summoned as some people had been injured.
GCC transport panel to meet in Doha
Qatar will host a meeting of the GCC transport and communications ministries committee at the St Regis Hotel on Thursday. The meeting will discuss GCC railway project and the minutes of the 24th meeting of GCC officials in charge of sea ports authorities.
