Pilgrims flocked yesterday - the second day of Eid al-Adha which is the first day of Al-Tashreeq three-day rituals - to the Jamarat facility in the holy site of Mina to throw the three Jamarat, the minor followed by the middle and then the grand Aqabah, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported
“The Jamarat facility accommodated as usual the huge number of pilgrims who successively flocked to throw the three Jamarat at ease and tranquility,” SPA said
Meanwhile, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, has ordered a safety review in the wake of Thursday’s stampede in which 717 pilgrims were killed.
Yesterday, pilgrims returned to cast pebbles at designated pillars inside the multilevel structure known as the Jamarat in Mina.
Security guards were strict in stopping any pilgrims from moving in the opposition direction to head off any potential stampedes.
According to Saudi-owned Al Arabiya TV, the pilgrim traffic in the site ran smoothly “without any congestion”.
The three-day pebble-throwing ritual, part of the annual Haj pilgrimage, symbolises resistance to the devil’s temptation.
The Haj ends today with pilgrims heading to Makkah to walk around the Kabaa seven times.
Around 1.9mn Muslims are participating in this year’s Haj, according to Saudi officials.
King Salman yesterday stressed Saudi Arabia’s “permanent keenness” on the Arab and Islamic unity, and not to allow any hidden hand to tamper with that emanating from its Arab and Islamic responsibility and regional and international role, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
This came in a speech made by the king at the annual reception in honour of Islamic countries’ leaders and pilgrim delegation heads.
“Islam is the religion of brotherhood, peace and compassion, justice and charity, and it is the religion that preaches goodness of life and its building,” King Salman said.
“We reiterate our continuous welcome to you at the place of descent of revelation, and the home of the last of prophets. We, in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as Allah Almighty has honoured us to serve this Great House (the Kaaba) and the pilgrims of the House of Allah, are dedicated, both the leadership and people, to exert all our efforts to make the journey of the guests of Allah as stress-free as possible, and to ensure their security and safety,” King Salman said.
