Doha

As many as 845,169 traffic violations were registered in Qatar during the first six months of this year, local Arabic daily Al-Sharq reported Friday.
Speeding was the cause of the maximum number of violations, at 523,363, followed by 15,562 for jumping red light. A source at the Traffic Department told the daily that the new amendments for the Traffic Law will be only applicable after 90 days from the day it is published at the official gazette and they will not be enforced with retrospective effect.
A source told local Arabic daily Arrayah that the 50% concession of fines accumulated on a motorist in case he paid within 30 days from the registration of the violation is only limited to certain cases, as specified in the law. Accordingly, the authority concerned can proceed with the reconciliation process with the offender, mostly if he has a clear traffic record to encourage him to be more disciplined on the road.
Sources also pointed out that when the new law goes into force, the authorities concerned would conduct a campaign at the sites and locations where vehicles are unauthorisedly displayed for sale.
