What Barcelona need now - after their travails in the Spanish and European Super Cups, and with all their injuries and suspensions - is a tranquil start to La Liga.
However, what they will have instead Sunday is a difficult return to Bilbao, where they were slaughtered 4-0 in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup August 14.
Bilbao confirmed their resilience by battling out a 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou Monday, a result which gave them their first trophy in 31 years - and provoked wild celebrations in the Basque city.
“We are really looking forward to Barca coming back here,” said Bilbao captain Carlos Gurpegui, amid all the celebrations.
“I doubt we will beat them 4-0 again, but who’s to say? What I do know is that we are going to give them another hard match.”
Bilbao will be without young forwards Iker Muniain, Inaki Williams and Javi Eraso, which leaves just the ageless Aritz Aduriz - who scored four of the five goals in the Super Cup - to lead the attack.
Meanwhile, Barca will be without Gerard Pique and Jeremy Mathieu, both suspended, plus mumps victim Neymar. In addition, Jordi Alba and Adriano are both doubtful with muscle strains.
Another probable absentee is winger Pedro, who is poised to sign for Chelsea.
BRAVO TO GET NOD
Barca coach Luis Enrique is likely to opt for Claudio Bravo as his league goalkeeper, the same as last season, especially after some shaky displays from understudy Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez - back in La Liga after 11 years absence - will also have to make a decision about his goalkeeper for Sunday’s visit to newly-promoted Sporting Gijon.
Benitez is likely to opt for Keylor Navas ahead of Kiko Casilla, while David de Gea has still not completed his move from Manchester United.
Real will take new signing Mateo Kovacic to Gijon, while Marco Asensio is poised to go on loan to Espanyol and Asier Illarramendi is also close to the exit door.
Gijon are delighted to be back in the top flight after three years’ absence.
Defender Luis Hernandez struck a note of optimism, saying: “Of course we can beat Real Madrid. It will be 11 against 11, in a packed stadium that will be cheering us on.”
Sunday’s other games are Levante v Celta Vigo and Real Betis v Villarreal.
Tomorrow will see new-look Atletico Madrid at home to newcomers Las Palmas. Deportivo La Coruna will host Real Sociedad, Espanyol will take on Getafe and Valencia - with part of their focus on Tuesday’s Champions League play-off trip to Monaco - will visit Rayo Vallecano.
La Liga will kick off today with a southern derby between Malaga and Sevilla.
The first round of games will finish Monday with Granada against Eibar.
