US player Serena Williams celebrating with the winner’s trophy, the Venus Rosewater Dish, after her women’s singles final victory over Spain’s Garbine Muguruza at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London yesterday. Williams defeated Muguruza 6-4, 6-4 to add the Wimbledon trophy to the US, Australian and French Opens she already had in her collection over the last year. Williams said holding all four major titles at the same time made her sixth Wimbledon triumph one of the sweetest moments of her career. The 33-year-old’s second “Serena Slam” — she also achieved the feat in 2002-03 — was just one of a slew of historic milestones that came with her 21st major title. She is the first woman to win the French Open and Wimbledon back to back since 2002. And if she successfully defends the US Open title in August she will become the first woman since Steffi Graf in 1988 to win a calendar Grand Slam.  Also yesterday, Swiss veteran Martina Hingis, 18 years after winning the singles, provided a fitting finale to the day when the 34-year-old partnered India’s Sania Mirza to the women’s doubles title.
