A father-of-two killed in a suspected drive-by shooting outside a bakery he owned in north London was “in the wrong place at the wrong time,” friends said yesterday.
Erdogan Guzel, 42, was caught in a volley of bullets when up to four rounds were fired from a machine gun on Friday evening.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An unnamed passing woman was also caught up in the gunfire outside Bros Bakery in Wood Green on Friday evening.
Witnesses today told how the black car had pulled up to the shop in Lordship Lane before a gunman started firing, apparently at random.
Mihir Yurdakul, 35, said he was with Guzel who was sprayed with bullets “within a few seconds”.
“We were sat outside the shop and they came with a car and a big gun,” he told the Evening Standard.
“They just started shooting - they didn’t care who was there. They were just shooting everywhere from a machine gun.
“Everyone was diving on the floor to save their lives, and then we found out our friend had been shot so we called police.”
Guzel had two children, a son and a daughter aged between 15 and 16, who were on holiday in Turkey when the incident happened.
Asked to describe his friend, Yurdakul said: “He was a good guy, a very good guy. He had a family and two kids, and he was working hard for his family.”
Other friends also claimed Guzel had not been the intended target of the shooting.
Imam Sumbul, a friend of Guzel’s cousin, said: “He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The bullet was not meant for him.
“There is a big Turkish community here, everyone uses each other’s shops. As you can see, a lot of people here are interested in what happened and want to know what went on here tonight.”
He said a similar incident happened at the end of June in which a gunman tried to open fire but failed to discharge his weapon before fleeing.
One eyewitness, who was in a fish and chip shop near the scene, said he saw the aftermath of the incident. He said: “I saw the woman and turned away. Then I heard the bang.
“She fell down on the floor. There was a child on a bike and he was lying on the floor as well.”
Haydar Alma, 42, who owns a nearby Polish shop, told ITV News: “I was in the shop working and I heard the gun, like an automatic. I looked outside and I saw the car and the window open and somebody shooting.
“After they had gone I went outside and I saw the woman. Somebody called an ambulance.”
Alma said passers-by rushed to help the victims, and he was asked to get tissues to try and stop the bleeding whilst they waited for emergency services to arrive.
He said: “The ambulance took the woman and did something for the man here. I asked the policeman what had happened and he said he had died.”
Police were today continuing a murder investigation after the shooting at around 5.45pm on Friday. There have been no arrests so far.
The woman victim, aged in her 50s, remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
