Thirty-one people were taken to hospital in New York yesterday when two buses collided in the busy Lincoln Tunnel, officials said.
No one was critically injured, a spokesman for the New York Fire Department said.
The accident happened at around 9:30am when a New Jersey transit bus rear-ended a private bus carrying Canadian students in the tunnel, one of the busiest roads linking Manhattan and New Jersey.
The New York Fire Department said 31 patients were transported to local hospitals.
A pregnant woman stuck in backed up traffic reportedly went into labour and was also taken to hospital.
The crash set off major traffic problems in the area, with reports of drivers and passengers stuck in the tunnel for over two hours. The worst of the delays cleared by about noon, and officials said the evening commute should not be affected.
The private bus that was hit was carrying 26 students and two staff members from a school in Toronto who had travelled to New York on an eighth-grade graduation trip. They felt a bump from behind, but no one was injured and they continued to the day’s activities.
Both buses had been travelling eastbound and were near the Manhattan side of the tunnel when the crash occurred. The cause of the collision was under investigation, officials said.
