Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) recently recognised the latest group of medical graduates from its Internal Medicine Residency Programme (IMRP) at a ceremony held at the Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City.
A total of 32 residents were formally recognised at the event for successfully passing their examinations and fulfilling their training requirements. More than 200 attendees, including Department of Medicine’s senior leaders and programme faculty, attended the ceremony.
The four-year IMRP, which is now well-established at HMC, is considered the largest training programmes for residents offered by HMC. Over 200 graduates have completed their residency training since 2007.
Each year, over 300 medical graduates, seeking higher medical training and education, apply for the programme and placement is offered to about 50, according to Dr Ahmed al-Mohamed, IMRP programme director.
“This is a rigourous residency training programme and follows a comprehensive curriculum which is continually developed to offer the best possible training to our residents. We have specified goals and objectives for each year of residency training, and residents are expected to complete a total of 12 months out of the first three years in general medicine and then rotate between different specialties,” Dr al-Mohammed explained.
In addition to acquiring medical knowledge, residents are also trained in key competency areas established by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education such as patient care, procedural competency, communication skills, professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and system-based practice. The principles of research, quality and patient safety are also deeply embedded within the training programme.
During the ceremony, residents shared some of their experiences under the IMRP. Certificates of achievement were presented to all graduates and special recognition was given to some faculty and residents for their outstanding performances.
