Qatargas presented several key papers at the 26th World Gas Conference (WGC 2015) held from June 1 to 5 in Paris.
Qatargas CEO Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa al-Thani delivered a keynote speech on “Natural Gas: A Core Pillar of a Sustainable Energy Future,” which underlined the major role that liquefied natural gas (LNG) will play in a sustainable energy future.
Sheikh Khalid stressed that LNG represents “an attractive alternative to unsustainable, higher priced, higher polluting, and less reliable energy options.”
Qatargas chief operating officer (commercial and shipping) Alaa Abu Jbara presented the paper, “Fundamental Drivers of Global Supply & Demand: A Qatargas Perspective.”
His topic explained how the fundamentals of favourable demographics, economic growth, energy demand growth, and rising levels of environmental awareness leave LNG “uniquely positioned among the world’s primary energy sources.”
Meanwhile, environmental affairs division manager Khalifa Ahmed al-Sulaiti delivered the paper on “Greenhouse Gas Life Cycle Assessment for an LNG Plant in Qatar,” which showed how GHG emissions from Qatargas’ LNG production compare favourably with other existing and upcoming LNG facilities.
The paper also highlighted the advantage of natural gas as “a cleaner fuel” as levels of GHG emission resulting from power generation using natural gas is significantly lower than the most efficient coal-based power generation technologies.
Another paper, “Role of LNG Portfolio Optimisation in a Rapidly Changing Market Environment” by senior commercial analyst Amine Yacef, established that portfolio optimisation “is an essential tool to meet demand where and when needed.”
The presentation described how Qatargas has redeployed its portfolio by increasing supplies to Asia to meet the growing demand and reducing supplies to Europe and America following the drop in demand.
“LNG: A Clean Fuel for a Global Sustainable Energy Future and the Role of Qatargas” was presented by commercial analyst Pawandeep Singh. He highlighted the attributes of LNG as the fuel for the future and some of the initiatives Qatargas has taken to support the development and long-term sustainability of LNG markets.
Europe’s current energy today and why LNG is needed for the future clean energy needs of Europe was the subject of senior commercial analyst Stephanie Aqui’s paper, “What does it take for Europe to attract LNG.”
The triennial event, of which Qatargas was a principal sponsor, attracted more than 4,000 industry professionals from across the globe, including hundreds of delegates who visited the Qatargas stand at the exhibition.
