As part of its continuing efforts of putting together an enriching programme for Western Classical music lovers, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) will serve something distinctly special at its free-for-all chamber music concerts on the first Thursday of every month at the Museum of Islamic Art.
At 6 pm on May 7, the programme titled “Music from the Movies” is all set to stir some melodic drama at the Atrium of the museum.
Featuring special guest Luiza Bold on the pan flute, the show will have Lorena Manescu on violin, Nina Heidenreich on violin, Islam Nour El-Hefnawy on violin, Raluca Stancel on violin, Merve Kenet-Bulun on viola, Ines Wein on viola, Hassan Moataz El Molla on cello, Radu L. Mihaescu on double bass, and Ferdinand Schäfer on percussion.
The choicest of pieces chosen from the most iconic movie soundtracks is guaranteed to satiate all kinds of movie and music aficionados.
Sample the repertoire: Ennio Morricone: From Cinema Paradiso (revised for pan flute and string orchestra by Merve Kenet Bulun); Camille Saint-Saëns: Danse Bacchanale; Henry Mancini: Theme from The Pink Panther; Henry Mancini: From Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Moon River; Henry Mancini: Music from Peter Gunn; Leonard Bernstein: From West Side Story, Tonight; and Aram Khachaturian: From Spartacus, Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia.
To make matters more compelling, the Orchestra will also perform Arabian Nights, A Whole New World and Friend Like Me from Aladdin; music from James Bond films; and music from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.
If you can’t wait till then to get your music fix, head to the MIA Park at 8pm this Saturday for a free concert featuring conductor Andreas Sebastian Weiser and Hassan Moataz El Molla on cello.
“A programme of popular favourites begins with the Qatar National Anthem and includes music from Aladdin as well as compositions by Marcel Khalife, Bernstein, Grieg, Shostakovich and Strauss. A corporate anthem composed by Qatari composer Wael Hassan Ali bin Ali will be premiered at the concert,” says the QPO.
