A ceremony was held recently to celebrate the successful completion of Hamad Medical Corporation’s Essential Midwifery Skills training programme by its first batch of participants.
In a statement, HMC has stressed that it is transforming the continuing education provided to its nurses and midwives in support of its vision of providing patients and their families with the “safest, most effective and most compassionate care.”
In 2014, HMC became the first healthcare organisation in the GCC to be recognised by the American Nursing Credentialing Centre as a provider unit of high-quality continuing nursing education.
Building on that success, a platform of foundation programmes is currently under development. The suite of continuing nursing education programmes will ensure that all HMC nurses and midwives practise to the same high standards across the full range of medical specialties, the statement added.
“One of the first of these programmes is the Essential Midwifery Skills training programme,” said Maureen Brown, assistant executive director for midwifery education at HMC’s Women’s Hospital.
“We initiated this programme in August 2014 to continue to build on the skills of our nurses and midwives who provide care to women in Qatar during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period. The focus of the evidence-based programme was communication and developing practice using a variety of educational methods and tools.”
Haila Salim, assistant executive director for nursing at the Women’s Hospital, expressed support for the programme and underscored the importance of developing the role of nurse-midwives in Qatar.
Professor Ann-Marie Cannaby, chief nursing officer at HMC, delivered a welcome address at the ceremony held at HMC’s Hotel and Club earlier this month to celebrate the completion of the programme.
