College of the North Atlantic – Qatar (CNA-Q) and Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) have signed an agreement formalising the latter as official sponsor of the sixth CNA-Q Skills Competition.
The competition is the largest academic-focused event in the CNA-Q calendar, with more than 350 students competing in 35 skills challenges across a number of disciplines in Engineering Technology, Health Sciences, Information Technology, Language Studies and the Technician Preparatory Programme.
The CNA-Q Skills Competition gives students the opportunity to test the skills they have learned during their time at CNA-Q, while also competing against their classmates in a friendly environment.
“It is this kind of competition that directly mirrors the hands-on, experiential learning that we provide,” said Dr Ken MacLeod, president of CNA-Q. “Our students learn every day from industry experts using equipment they will use in the workforce. It is this type of education that separates a CNA-Q graduate from other graduates.”
Qapco has been a long-time supporter of CNA-Q and its students. The organisation has sponsored students since 2006 and in 2013 introduced leadership and empowerment training for CNA-Q students.
Dr Mohamed Yousef al-Mulla, vice-chairman and CEO of Qapco, said: “This collaboration is another fine example of how Qapco and CNA-Q work together so well for the benefit of their students. I believe that such programmes do make a difference to the students and will enhance their education in such a way that they will be more prepared to meet the challenges of the workplace.
“This is our second year of sponsoring this event and we are pleased to be able to be involved again as the outcome of last year’s competition was extremely valuable to the students as they are given the opportunity to develop their leadership, team-building, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.”
Abdulaziz al-Ansari, an IT student, said: “I am looking forward to testing my talents and skills in an atmosphere full of enthusiasm and challenges.”
The sixth Annual CNA-Q Skills Competition takes place on March 24.
