National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) chairman Dr Ali bin Samikh al-Marri yesterday met with Human Rights Council (HRC) president Joachim Rucker.
During the meeting, Dr al-Marri presented a comprehensive introduction about NHRC and its local, regional and international roles.
They discussed ways to implement recommendations of the international conference on the challenges to security and human rights in the Arab region, which was organised by the committee in Doha last November.
The NHRC chairman gave a briefing on the international conference on the challenges to security and human rights, the role of NHRC’s partners in organising the conference in addition to the steps taken by the committee to implement recommendations of the conference .
They also discussed ways to examine recommendations of the conference as part of reports of special rapporteurs and working groups such as reports of the special rapporteur on the question of torture, special rapporteur on human rights and counter-terrorism, special rapporteur on the right to peaceful assembly and special rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers as well as the working group on arbitrary detention, working group on enforced disappearances and working group on mercenaries.
With regard to recommendations of the conference, Dr al-Marri said the committee established contact with relevant bodies such as the general secretariat of Arab interior ministers’ council and the permanent Arab commission for human rights within the Arab League, citing that the Arab interior ministers’ council reaffirmed that the recommendations would be tabled at their next meeting in mid-March.
“We also asked the permanent Arab commission for human rights to organise a session to discuss inclusion of recommendations in reports submitted by the Arab states,” he said, adding that there were contacts with the GCC countries, OIC and the Arab Parliament.
Dr al-Marri invited the HRC president to visit NHRC to arrange meetings with Qatari officials and civil society organisations in the country.
The HRC president said the council was well-acquainted with recommendations, stressing the importance of giving priority to the recommendations in HRC’s work.
