Tips for a good relationship

The article “10 ways to make relationship last forever” (Gulf Times, March 8) made interesting reading. Being born into a family where our parents quarrelled at times in front of my brother and me despite they being good-natured persons, I have learnt not to make the same mistake.
In the article, the writer Barton Goldsmith says: “Never argue in front of the kids. The greatest gift parents can give their children is to have a good relationship with each other. When you argue, your children can become very anxious about what will happen to the family and to them. Also never use the D word (divorce); it is far too threatening and toxic.” Sound advice indeed.
I realised just after my marriage that my wife and I had vastly different kinds of upbringing. Reacting immediately to each other’s mistakes resulted in altercations in the beginning. Then we became tolerant to each other. I had already made up my mind not to utter any harsh words in front of our children. I practised silence in certain situations. She followed suit, realising what I was trying to achieve. It yielded good results.
I treat her with dignity and help her in all household work. I do not talk ill of others to her and lecture her about issues at my workplace. We ensure that the words we speak at home are filtered well from our thoughts. So, the home has become a place of peace and love. We do not show off our love and nor do we get angry in public. There is only one life. Why should one make it complicated? Our attitude to our family life matters a lot.

Extend ‘free’ offer to all tenants
Dear Sir,
I agree with RJ, pleading for equal treatment between old and new tenants by the Ezdan management in their housing complex in Al Wakrah (Gulf Times, March 8). I hope the management will extend the “free months” offer to tenants who renewed their leases on time under the new rates. Some people, it seems, discontinued their leases and renewed after a gap to take advantage of the “free” offer.
We look forward to a fair decision from the management.
