Former army commander General Sarath Fonseka is likely to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal by President Maithripala Sirisena, media reported yesterday.
This will be in appreciation of the duties discharged by General Fonseka in the separatist war against the LTTE. The president is likely to decorate him as the Field Marshal at a ceremony to be held on March 22, Daily News reported.
General Fonseka led the war against the LTTE and played a major role in militarily defeating them. Former president Mahinda Rajapakse stripped him of his titles shortly after the latter stood against him at the 2010 presidential election.
After the end of Rajapakse’s rule following the 2015 presidential election, President Sirisena restored the rights of General Fonseka withdrawing all cases filed against him by the previous regime.
