More than 1,000 employees of Alfardan Group participated in several sport and physical activities at Al Shefallahiya Oasis in Al Khor yesterday to celebrate Qatar’s National Sport Day.
Alfardan’s annual celebration reflected the Group’s support for the nationwide efforts to strategically position the country as one of the world’s premier sports hubs.
“We have been the first private company to support the vision of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on the creation of National Sport Day,” Omar Alfardan, president and CEO of Alfardan Group, told Gulf Times.
He said Qatar is the first country in the region and in the Middle East, and one of the few countries around the world, to have a National Sport Day festivity.
He, along with Ali Alfardan, vice-chairman of Alfardan Group, also praised the leadership and wise decision of HH the Emir in creating a special day for sports.
“We are always behind his wishes and plans, and we follow his directions,” said Ali. “We are very proud and happy to be part of this.”
Omar and Ali Alfardan joined their employees in the celebration and watched the activities and sports competitions, especially a football match between the Alfardan Automobiles and St Regis teams.
Both reiterated the importance of engaging oneself in sports, saying it is one of the keys to productive and healthy living.
Ali urged their employees to continue playing through the year, stressing that sport should not be limited to just one day.
“We advise them to be physically active and play more to prevent various diseases. When you are into sport, there will be no heart problems, no diabetes, and you will have normal blood pressure,” he pointed out.

Alfardan usually holds the event in Doha every year but this time, it was decided to take it to Al Shefallahiya Oasis in a bid to host more sports competitions and activities and encourage all attendees to exercise and walk longer.
Omar said they want each family member to walk from one venue to another. “So, everybody is exercising, including my family.”
The gathering also served as an opportunity for company and family bonding among Alfardan employees who got a chance to foster co-operation, team spirit, dedication and excellence.
Ali noted that their National Sport Day event is getting bigger every year due to the increasing number of attendees.
Employees formed a number of teams and participated in different competitions such as football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, tennis, table tennis and cricket.
Groups of cheerleaders also entertained the crowd with their dance and intermission numbers.
Besides sports events, Alfardan also organised a number of recreational activities to encourage all to exercise.
“Alfardan Sport Day was a big success, with all our employees and their families enjoying the sports matches and the host of activities we lined up for them,” Ali noted.
He said a group of management staff and employees was actively involved in preparing the games to ensure an excellent outcome. “Sports engagement among Qatari citizens and residents is one solid initiative to attain our leaders’ goal of promoting overall wellness,” stressed Ali.
Omar echoed the statement of Ali, saying one of the three main goals of Qatar National Vision 2030’s human development pillar is to ensure a healthy population to sustain society’s prosperity.
Alfardan Group has been committed to this endeavour and vowed to strive more to attain its objective by promoting a culture of healthy living within the organisation.
“Encouraged by the continuous success of our programme, we will remain proactively engaged in such initiatives as we increase the sporting activity programme year by year,” he added.
