Total’s annual sports tournament, Total Cup, will commence today.
It coincides with Qatar’s National Sport Day and will feature three months of competitions for Total’s employees and their families.
The tournament will combine eight main competitions, namely Total Olympics, tennis, football, bowling, badminton, table tennis, volleyball and basketball, with special tournaments for men, women and children.
Total Olympics will be held today at the Thumama sports ground with eight different disciplines, including walking, sprinting, tug of war, potato sack race, Frisbee target, relay and a marathon.
One of the major competitions this year will be tennis, whose finals will take place during Qatar Total Open, the Total-sponsored world-class women’s tennis tournament held at Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
Total has deeply committed itself to promote sports, physical and mental well-being and lauds the efforts made by the Qatar government to encourage a healthier lifestyle for its citizens and residents through initiatives such as Qatar National Sport Day.
Total also uses sports as a means to break all barriers as it brings people of different origins and backgrounds together, facilitating cultural integration, unity and co-operation while competing for a common goal. All the employees and their families will be divided into four teams representing the company’s colours – Navy, Red, Blue and Orange.
An awards ceremony will be held in the finale of the tournament to commemorate the top players of each competition and to crown the overall winners of the tournament. The winning team will receive the Total Cup trophy, which will be passed on from last year’s winners, the Blue team.
Guillaume Chalmin, managing director of Total E&P Qatar and group representative, said: “We are very keen to support Qatar National Sport Day through our first Total Cup event – Total Olympics. We will have a great diversity of participants - men, women and children of different nationalities. This is all being done in the sports spirit, and this healthy competition brings about the positive values of unity and cultural integration.”
