Narcotic pills are the most common form of contraband that smugglers try to bring into the country through the Abu Samra border post, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported, quoting a senior official.
Brigadier Nasser bin Abdullah al-Thani, chairman of the Permanent Committee for Abu Samra border post, said hiding narcotic substances in vehicle tyres and engine compartments is one of the methods used by the smugglers. The post has qualified officers who can detect such cases and catch offenders, he added.
Brigadier al-Thani, meanwhile, referred to a plan for development and expansion of the Abu Samra post and increasing its capacity by 200% to keep pace with the requirements of Qatar in hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the daily notes.
Stating that a holistic development plan was discussed with the competent authorities to take necessary action, he stressed that the provision of quality staff for the post to detect smuggling of narcotic substances and other prohibited materials.
Further, Brigadier al-Thani said the port would shortly use state-of-the-art devices to detect forged passports and other documents, according to the report.
