Everton got a much-needed win Monday to move into the top half of the Premier League while extending the away woes of Queens Park Rangers.
Ross Barkley, Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith scored in the Toffee’s 3-1 victory at Goodison Park. It was just their second win in six matches but moved them up into 10th place ahead of city rivals Liverpool on goal difference.
“We’ve got the three points today so that’s going to give us a bit of confidence,” Barkley told Sky Sports. “We’re going to take every game as it comes and hopefully put things right on the pitch and get the three points.”
QPR have lost all eight away matches this season and are the only team in England’s top four divisions without a road point. They remain in the bottom three in 18th place.
“I was not that disappointed with the performance tonight. I thought we played OK,” QPR manager Harry Redknapp told the BBC. “You need a little luck sometimes, and it went their way a little bit tonight.”
Barkley’s solo effort gave Everton the lead in the 33rd minute. The midfielder got the ball just over the midway line and carried it deep into QPR territory before unleashing a drive from outside the area that took a slight deflection on the way to the top corner of the net.
The Toffees doubled their lead just before half-time when a free-kick from Mirallas took a major deflection off Eduardo Vargas in the wall, leaving Rob Green with no chance to make the save.
Everton made it 3-0 early in the second half on Naismith’s header.  Green got a hand to the ball, which then appeared to hit a defender and go into the net.
Bobby Zamora scored a consolation goal for QPR with 10 minutes remaining. It was just their third away goal of the season. Even with his team’s poor away form, Redknapp found positives.
“I have no doubts we will get points away from home,” he said.
“We pressed better as a team, and, I thought, up until they scored, they did not have many ideas about how to break us down. I am optimistic. We have played difficult teams away from home - the ones you expect to be up there and the ones who are in form.”
Everton manager Roberto Martinez liked what he saw from his own team.
“It was a really important win,” he told the BBC. “I thought the performance today was a difficult one because QPR came with a lot of intent and energy, but to be able to score three goals past that system shows the quality in our side.”
