A cafe is battered by sea waves during stormy weather in Portstewart, Northern Ireland, yesterday. Energy companies were working to restore power to around 17,500 homes in the west of Scotland affected by stormy weather and high winds. Parts of Britain were also battered by 80mph winds and waves over 50ft as a “weather bomb” hit coastal regions. The Met Office issued several severe weather warnings, with the storm from the Atlantic Ocean expected to cause four days of chaos. A 52-foot wave was recorded off the Hebrides in north-west Scotland yesterday morning. Conditions were so bad at sea that the RNLI has dubbed it “Black Wednesday”.
