Director-General of Public Security (DGPS) Staff Maj Gen Saad bin Jassim al-Khulaifi on Sunday launched the celebrations marking the third edition of the ‘GCC Inmates Week’ at Landmark mall, organised under the theme, “Lead me to a Better Future”.

The DGPS said observing ‘Inmates Week’ came in the context of the implementation of a decision of the GCC interior ministers. Qatar, he stressed, was highly vigilant regarding inmates. International penal and correctional institutions and human rights organisations have been making frequent visits, in addition to weekly visits by embassies concerned to the centres, according to a statement.

Brig Mohamed Saud al-Otaibi, director of the Penal and Correctional Institutions Department, said the department is always attentive to the recommendations of international institutions on inmates’ affairs as the Ministry of Interior (MoI) attaches a lot of importance to preserving human rights at all levels.

‘Inmates Week’ organiser-in-charge Lt Adil Mirza al-Qasimi said the celebrations, which are being held until tomorrow (December 10), are showcasing different activities, including exhibitions of different agencies. Officials will visit ailing inmates admitted to different hospitals while GCC delegates will conduct tours and attend sports events organised for the inmates.

The opening ceremony was attended by the GCC countries’ representatives and Qatar had also sent its representatives to attend events in other GCC countries.

Several institutions, including Qatar Foundation for Protection and Social Rehabilitation, Social Protection Department in the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Qatar Guest Centre, Fanar, Religious Guidance Department, Raf and Qatar Red Crescent, along with MoI departments such as Community Policing, Penal and Correctional Institutions, Medical Services and Al Adied are participating in the exhibitions organised at Landmark.
