Drainage improvement work is under way in the Industrial Area.

Infrastructure development works of several roads and drainage systems in the Industrial Area are progressing at a fast pace, covering more than 480 hectares.

The estimated cost of the first phase of the project is about QR1.4bn.
Ashghal's Manager of Roads Projects Department Saoud al-Tamimi and engineer Ahmed al-Obaidly explained the significance of the ongoing works and how it would eventually help reduce traffic congestion.

The two also briefed a visiting media team on the works being carried out to improve drainage systems in the area.

The two officials said the infrastructure projects are part of a comprehensive plan to develop the Industrial Area which has several business and industrial establishments.

The project has been divided into several phases to facilitate better implementation.
The construction of the first phase, which was awarded to a consortium of Qatari Trading & Contracting Group and MSF Engenharia, SA is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2016.

The first phase, being carried out under the Local Roads and Drainage Networks Programme, includes the protection, relocation and upgrade of the existing utilities such as potable water lines, electrical cables and substations, telecommunication networks and the construction of treated sewage effluent networks for irrigation of the soft landscaping and public gardens.

Al-Tamimi and al-Obaidly said works relate to the construction of a large tank to store rainwater, and development and upgrade of the drainage and sewerage systems, including micro tunnelling works.

"In addition, the project will also establish an updated street lighting system incorporating the most advanced technologies, and replace the old boundary walls separating the existing facilities and streets with new walls," said al-Tamimi.

When completed, the drainage systems will eliminate the problems of sewage overflow and surface and ground water collection and the need for trucks or tankers to drain water.

"The new system will meet the entire requirements of industrial and commercial businesses, and will ensure efficient water drainage. It will also protect the area from any potential hazard resulting from unforeseen weather conditions and enhance the general view of the area," said al-Obaidly.

The authorities will ensure the new projects meet global standards. This will include upgrading the existing roads, establishing signalised intersections, multi-level intersections and pedestrian and cycle paths, in addition to installing lighting systems, and beautification and landscaping works.

The works, said the officials, will contribute to road safety, smoother traffic flow, less pollution and a better environment.

The project will develop an area that serves more than 580 land plots for commercial projects and has a positive impact on commercial and industrial businesses.

"It will enhance the position of Doha Industrial Area and the overall public opinion," said al-Tamimi.

Ashghal is working on the excavation of trenches, construction of concrete examination and maintenance rooms (inspection rooms), and installation of pipes for surface and ground water drainage systems on the West Industrial, Al Barradat, and Al Binaa streets.

The removal of the asphalt layer of the existing roads and excavation to the formation level in the West Industrial and Al Manager streets are in progress. This is in addition to the implementation of dewatering works in all trenches and treatment before drainage to the authorised region.

Micro tunnel shafts on Street 15 are being constructed to connect to the drainage network.

Excavation in some residential areas has also started to prepare for the construction of a new boundary wall.
