After an enthralling session of comedy as part of United Nations of Comedy (UNoC) earlier this year, the region’s very own stand-up comedian, Nemr Abour Nassar, is all set to entertain the Doha audience once again this month.
The pioneer of stand-up comedy in the region and a crowd puller, Nemr, the Labanese-American comedian, is coming to Doha with his new solo show ‘Uninterrupted Funny Observations’ on December 19 at Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC).
“Basically this show is badass, it’s the best I have ever done. I have been working on it for more than two years. But it comes at a time where I am tired of how much people bad mouth Lebanon, so I wanted to do something for all the people who just nag and do nothing to remember that while they have been complaining, we have been working,” says the comedian about the upcoming show, promising it to be another laughter-packed session for the people in Qatar.
“This show is a tribute to everyone who understands the challenges of Lebanon, but doesn’t stop, because ‘This is My Country’. The lyrics for the song in the clip are ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’, and ‘Don’t tell me our youth is running out, it’s only just begun. As always, on December 19, I can’t wait to hear you all laughing. This one is for you, Lebanon,” adds Nemr.
At the same venue in August this year, Nemr appeared before the local audience for a brief half an hour session during the UNoC 2014 group performance, organised as part of Qatar Summer Festival 2014 by Qatar Tourism Authority and Qatar Event Diary.
Created by ADabisc, it was a headline comedy tour bringing distinguished and well-reputed international comedy stars to impress Doha with their sense of humour, blended with their multicultural backgrounds.
It featured six comedians including Nemr Abou Nassar, Sammy Obeid, Khaled Khalafalla, Amir K, Mo Amer and Ali Al Sayed. As the format of the show, the comedians were split into two teams, ‘The Dumbocrats’ and ‘The Republicants’, performing individually and head to head, to win the votes of the audience members.
The Doha audience could not get much of Nemr due to the format constraints. However, the comedian is returning with a solo show to compensate. It would be all Nemr and the house is likely to be packed once again as the stand-up comedian is a known crowd puller.
As the pioneer of stand-up comedy in the region, Nemr is hugely popular both inside and outside Lebanon. Nemr has also been the only stand-up comedian in the region to tour the entire region and sell out shows on his own bill, headlining his own specials. He has become a household name throughout the Middle East. He also performed for American audiences in the US and is known in Lebanon as ‘Lebanon’s King of Comedy’.
Nemr began performing stand-up comedy as a student hosting concerts as a stand-up comedian at his university, the American University of Beirut. He is a pioneer in stand-up comedy throughout the Middle East, and his US comedy appearances have cemented his legacy in this regard. Nemr has also become a role-model for aspiring Lebanese who see their own potential through his success.
Starting his professional career in 2006, Nemr has promoted cultural entertainment where people can escape to and return with a renewed vigour. Since his first show at the Hotel De Ville, he has graced the marquise at Lebanon’s top venues, such as the Casino du Liban, Biel, Sky Bar, Edde Sands, BO18 Classic, Snatch, and the Hard Rock Cafe where he was the main attraction for their New Year’s Eve celebration. Nemr was also featured on Comedy Central’s Insider where his work received praise.
He has to his credit his own feature specials such as “This is why I’m Hot”, “Eye of the Tiger”, “Made in USA”, “EPIC” and “Victorious Secret” besides producing and starring in Beirut Stand Up Comedy Festival and the Middle East first live comedy radio show “The Comedy Revolution” on Mix FM. Nemr performs mainly in English mixing it with Arabic at times.
