A QR668.93mn contract for the revamping and development of the existing Al Shahaniya-Al Jemailiya road via Al Otouriyah, which spans over 28.7km, was awarded yesterday by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal).

The project, expected to be ready by the last quarter of 2016, includes a two-lane road on either direction, separated by a median. The road would also have a provision for adding one more lane on both sides in the future.

It would also incorporate such features as dedicated pedestrian paths and exclusive cycle paths besides a pedestrian bridge that provides access to bus stops.

The project, according to Ashghal authorities, would feature four main intersections, namely with the roundabout leading to the camel track, the round about to Al Kharib road, the round about towards Al -Otouriyah and the round about leading to Al Ghuwairiyah.

The contract covers development of services and infrastructure facilities,  rainwater drainage, and smart transport systems. The project includes the operation, installation and maintenance of electrical sub-stations also.

One of the major highlights is the camel underpass that would provide access to the camel track located within the project area. Other road works awarded yesterday included the development of the road infrastructure in western Wakrah, which would be executed at a cost of QR490mn.

The project, located on the western side of Wakrah town, is bound by the Wukair road on the north, Wakrah bypass to the west and south and existing residential areas to the east.

The areas covered are being developed as residential, commercial, government and entertainment zones, it is learnt.

The project, to be executed in three phases, will cover an area of more than 1,800,000 sqm. Besides the development of the roads, other infrastructure facilities such as storm water drainage, sewage networks, treated sewage effluent networks for irrigation, internal roads, parking lots, road entrance and exit, a network of pedestrian paths and cycle tracks and landscape features.

A similar work worth QR544.99mn, incorporating most of the above features as those in west Wakrah, would be carried out in Rawdat Abal Heeran (Package 2) area. It covers approximately 2,800,000 sq m over a vast area in the western outskirts of Doha.

Works totalling to approximately QR322mn would be undertaken as part of the development of roads and other infrastructure in northern Bani Hajer on the western side of Doha.

The project, spread over nearly 1,350,000,000 sq m would be carried out in areas falling under Rayyan municipality, which witnessed sweeping developments in recent years.

The new works include construction of linking roads and paved roads granting access to existing and future residential units.

The project also features construction of a network of secondary roads, pedestrian paths, road signs, street lighting, installation of fences, street signals and traffic control systems among other facilities.

Other works awarded yesterday include the construction and development of roads in New Salata (QR289.75mn), developments in Aziziya East (QR217mn),  construction of boundary wall in Al Khor Industrial Area (QR61mn), and flow diversion schemes in Al Wajbah and New Rayyan (QR118mn).
