Guest speakers and participants from 33 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, the US and Australia attended the ACS/IEEE International Conference on Computer Systems and Applications (AICCSA), hosted and organised by Qatar University’s (QU) Department of Computer Science and Engineering from November 10 to 13.
Held under the patronage of the ACS and IEEE institutions, the 11th edition of the conference presented papers that included topics on cloud and distributed computing, high performance computing, big data, business intelligence, analytics BPM, web services, security, privacy, data and knowledge management, natural language processing, e-learning and m-learning, among many others.
Through support from conference sponsors, QU students participated in the event’s activities and had the opportunity to network with international students, professors and industry professionals, and deepen their knowledge of current and emerging ICT fields.
Also on the agenda were a one-day PhD symposium where research students were able to present their work to the international community and develop their professional network, one-day tutorials delivered by recognised experts and two half-day workshops on the Internet of things and big data for industry engineers and
university scholars.
Attending the opening ceremony were QU president Prof Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad, the Minister of Information and Communication Technology HE Dr Hessa al-Jaber, Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy ICT & stakeholder manager Ahmad Kawakb, ictQATAR chair Prof Abdelaziz Bouras, Qatar Computing Research Institute director Dr Ahmed Elmagarmid, QCRI principal scientist Dr Mohamed Zaki and Qatar National Research Fund ICT programme manager Dr Munir Tag.
In her welcome address, Prof al-Misnad expressed pride at the College of Engineering (CENG) being selected to organise and host the event, noting that QU continues to invest in making the college a leader in the region through quality ABET-accredited programmes, Bachelor, Master and doctoral-level degrees, research opportunities for students and faculty members, and a network of industrial and research partners.
“The conference programme reflects a strong commitment on the part of the organisers to bring together academics, policy-makers, industry representatives and research funders. This sort of collaborative dialogue has been a long-standing tradition at QU,” she said.
Dr al-Jaber said: “This conference plays an important role in encouraging students and young researchers to pursue studies in advanced technologies and applications. I hope the students will take advantage of the opportunity to speak with and learn from senior researchers and build their international network.”
