The Bangladesh has initiated a legal process to punish three top secretaries and one joint secretary for forging 1971 freedom fighters’ certificates.

The ministry of public administration yesterday served show-cause notices on the four.

“They’ve been served with show-cause notices asking them to reply within 10 working days,” senior secretary of the public administration ministry Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury told newsmen.

“In case of any unsatisfactory reply, we’ll go for further action,” the secretary added.

The four officials are health secretary M Niaz Uddin Miah, former liberation war affairs secretary (now officer-on-special duty) Khondker Masud Siddiqui, Public Service Commission secretary AKM Amir Hossain and former joint secretary of Liberation War Affairs Ministry (now OSD) Abul Quasem Talukdar.

Earlier, on September 14, the ministry of liberation war affairs revoked the freedom fighter certificates of the four government officials along with former secretary to Prime Minister’s Office Molla Waheeduzzaman, now chairman of the privatisation commission, following recommendations by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for collecting those without following the due procedure just ahead of their retirement.

A freedom fighter’s certificate allows its holder to enjoy different state facilities including monthly allowances as well as jobs for themselves as well as their children.
