Minister Nawaz Sharif has prepared its agenda to negotiate with the PTI chief Imran Khan and is ready to accept his demand for mid-term election if the Supreme Court questions the credibility of the 2013 election in its finding, Internews reports from Islamabad.
Though the PML-N government has not finalised its negotiating team yet, it has hinted at constituting a team of various leaders of different political parties whom Imran Khan could trust.
A well-placed leader in the ruling PML-N said that the party leadership, after a thorough discussion with its own leaders and those from other parties, had prepared a four-to-five point agenda for talks with Imran.
“Keeping the PTI demands in view, the PML-N has prepared the agenda which could meet Imran Khan’s demands and he could pacify his workers to end the sit-in after these offers,” said the leader.
“The first important offer to be made by the government is to agree to Imran Khan’s demand for the mid-term elections. The government would assure Imran that if the Supreme Court disputes the credibility of 2013 general election and declares it rigged, then the government would announce the mid-term election.”
The second offer is the government’s readiness for verification of votes in different constituencies within 10 to 15 days and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would be bound to do the job. If rigging proves in a constituency, then by-election would be announced immediately.
“One thing is clear that the selected constituencies would not be of PTI’s choice and half of them would be of the ruling party’s,” the source said.
“The third point of the agenda is fixing a time frame for the Supreme Court’s commission’s findings and verification of votes. The government will request the apex court and the ECP to complete their tasks in the minimum-possible time. However, one thing is for sure that it would not take three or more than three months but much less time,” the source said.
The last thing on the agenda is release of funds for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, which it has been demanding since long. Besides, the government would also release maximum funds for the internally displaced persons and entrust the responsibility for their rehabilitation to the KP government.
Asked if the PTI leadership would agree to these offers, the source said there was no option available with the PTI but to accept them, as the system could not afford any confrontation in the current circumstances.
