Sri Lanka grabbed the wickets of both South African openers but the tourists continued to stretch their lead on the fourth day of the first test on Saturday.
South Africa were 63 for two wickets in their second innings at lunch, a lead of 226 runs with five sessions remaining, when play stopped with Faf du Plessis on eight not out and Hashim Amla unbeaten on seven.
The tourists lost the wickets of first innings century-maker Dean Elgar for 12 and Alviro Petersen for 32 with the Sri Lanka spinners claiming both.
Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath had Elgar caught by Dinesh Chandimal after the opener nicked one as he attempted a drive two balls after he was dropped at short leg by Kaushal Silva.
Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera picked up the wicket of Petersen shortly before lunch as he got a thin edge to Chandimal.
The South African batsman was unsuccessful in his challenge of the call.
Earlier in the morning, the tourists made quick work of Sri Lanka's final pair with Herath's 132 minute resistance finally ended by Morne Morkel, who got him to edge a catch to AB de Villiers at second slip for 19.
Shaminda Eranga, batting with some pain after needing eight stitches in his right hand, was left unbeaten on one.
Steyn finished with figures of five for 54 and Morkel had three for 49 as the hosts were limited to 292 all out.
