Algeria, in the World Cup knockout stages for the first time, were holding three-time winners Germany 0-0 at halftime in their last 16 clash in Porto Alegre on Tuesday.

Algeria gave the Germans plenty of nervy moments at the Beira-Rio stadium.

Sporting Lisbon striker Islam Slimani had a 17th minute goal disallowed for offside, and Faouzi Ghoulam had a shot edge past Manuel Neuer’s top corner.

Germany’s best chance came as the break beckoned, when only the lightning reflexes of Algeria keeper Rais Mbolhi denied first Toni Kroos’ shot and then Mario Goetze from the rebound.

The winner faces France—who beat Nigeria 2-0 earlier on Monday—in the quarter-finals in Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana on Friday.
