Student held for offensive remarks
Police in Bangladesh yesterday arrested a college student from a hostel for making derogatory remarks about Islam on Facebook. He was identified as Indrajit Pandey, 28, a master’s student of Kabi Nazrul Govt College in Dhaka. Sources said Indrajit was living at the college hostel with his brother.
Seeing the offensive comments against Islam on his Facebook wall, other students called him at the dormitory and gave him a beating on Monday night. Police rescued Indrajit and took him away. On Monday, students brought out a procession demanding action against Indrajit.
Trafficking victims return from Iran
Five Bangladeshi migrant workers have been repatriated from Iran where they were rescued by Iranian police from human traffickers. The trafficking victims have been identified as Abed, Rubel, Mostak, Nazmul and Jabed. a Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training official said that the five workers arrived yesterday. A non-government organisation, Rights Jessore, with the assistance of the Bangladesh embassy in Iran repatriated them. Binoy Kirishna, executive director, Rights Jessore, said some unscrupulous agents allured these migrants promising lucrative jobs in European countries including Greece. They were taken from Dubai to Iran.
Legendary folk singer dead
Bangladesh’s legendary folk singer Baul Abdul Karim Shah died at his village home in southwestern Kushtia district yesterday. He was 80. He had long been suffering from breathing problem and old-age complications. Winner of Bangladesh’s highest civilian award Ekushey Padak, Shah is survived by two wives, a son and three daughters. Thousands of people from all walks of life thronged his home to have a last glimpse of the singer who was an exponent of Lalon music. Shah was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on June 1.
