Lalanne and Dessort: Growing enthusiasm.

Total E&P Qatar recently concluded a high-level training, as a part of its commitment to share technical know-how with its partners, such as Qatar Petroleum (QP).

This professional training on “Petrophysical challenges in unconventional shale gas and shale oil plays”, which took place in the offices of QP, was delivered by Total’s technical experts, Bruno Lalanne and Dr Daniel Dessort, who collectively have more than 56 years of experience in the fields of petrophysics and geochemistry.

The participants of this course had the opportunity to review the existing laboratory techniques dedicated to unconventional shale plays, while listing their respective advantages and drawbacks.

Shale gas and shale oil refer to hydrocarbon found in the source rock, whose permeability is extremely poor. Today shale gas and shale oil are produced using horizontal drilling combined with massive hydraulic fracking.

The objective of this training was to shed more light on the importance of integrating petrophysics with geochemistry to get a better understanding of the rock complexity of shale gas and shale oil plays.

“We are very enthusiastic to introduce this new training programme with our partners QP, as shale oil and shale gas have increased in popularity as associated resources are potentially huge. Therefore it is important to address the challenges faced during their extraction and production,” Philippe Julien, Director of Total Research Centre Qatar (TRC-Q), said.

TRC-Q is located at the Qatar Science and Technology Park and works on three main projects — carbonate petroleum reservoirs, metrology and petrochemicals, while focusing on some of the challenges of Qatar.

The centre will continue to conduct such trainings for its employees and partners as per its yearly training programme, which includes about 10 courses per year. These trainings are based on various domains such as reservoir engineering, corrosion, solar energy, air quality, seismic reservoir characterization, 4D seismic, petrochemicals or health, safety and environment management.
