Bangladesh Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will meet newly-elected Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, a media report has said.

Chaudhury arrived in New Delhi on Sunday to represent Bangladesh as Premier Sheikh Hasina would be travelling to Japan at the time of the swearing-in ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhawan.

“She will meet Narendra Modi at 1 pm Tuesday,” bdnews24.com quoted Nazmul Huda, Bangladesh’s Parliament Secretariat official, as saying.

India’s external affairs ministry’s joint secretary Sripriya Ranganathan received Chaudhury at the Delhi airport.

Chaudhury is also scheduled to meet Indian President Pranab Mukherjee at 5pm today.

Chaudhury will return to Dhaka on May 28.

Two environmental organisations have urged Chaudhury to request the India’s new prime minister for not to implement the Indian inter-river linking project.

If the project is implemented, the environment, eco-system and economy of Bangladesh will be severely affected, said a joint statement of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) and Jatiya Nodi Rakkha Andolon.
