A total of 989 female students of Qatar University (QU) graduated at a ceremony held at Qatar National Convention Centre yesterday. Chairperson of Supreme Education Council (SEC) HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad al-Thani graced the occasion.

QU President Prof Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad, handed over the certificates to the graduates. Twenty-eight students were honoured for achieving GPA 3.50 and above.

The event was attended by HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Mohamed Abdul Wahed Ali al-Hammadi, QU vice-presidents, deans, heads of department, invited guests, faculty, students’ relatives, and alumni.

The new graduates comprised 889 Bachelors, 81 Masters, 8 PhDs and 11 Diplomas. The undergraduates included 371 from the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS), 197 from the College of Business & Economics (CBE), 14 from the College of Education (CED), 120 from the College of Engineering (CENG), 69 from the College of Law (LAWC), 22 from College of Pharmacy (CPH) and 96 from the College of Sharia & Islamic Studies (CSIS). 

Masters’ degrees included 21 from CAS, 14 from CBE, 20 from CED, 25 from CENG, and one from CPH.  It is CPH’s first graduating student of its MSc Pharm programme.  8 students received Doctor of Pharmacy degrees, while 11 received diplomas in education.

Prof al-Misnad thanked HE Sheikha Hind for honouring the graduates and noted the role of the SEC in guiding the country towards fulfilment of the education pillars of the national vision and the development strategies.

She said:  “As I told your male colleagues yesterday, Qatar University continues to ensure that its academic and research environment is of a standard and quality that enriches students’ lives and motivates them to strive for excellence. We value the importance of the student experience and spare no effort to provide them with opportunities in the classroom and in the real world to prepare them for any future endeavour.

“The relationships we have built with academic organisations, the public and private sector, government and civil society are a natural extension of our mission and vision.  Not only do they enhance our academic quality but they also serve to advance our research and training initiatives which are of considerable benefit to our students in particular”.

Valedictorian Amna al-Khalfan said: “We have waited for this day, endured ups and downs, and today we close this chapter in our lives and are prepared for the next phase towards a bright future. Sincerest gratitude to our parents for their unshakeable support and sacrifice, to our professors who guided us through our years of study, Qatar University which gave us the best education, and Qatar  in whom we have great pride”.
