Parents and teachers should encourage more Qatari children to join the medical profession, exhorted Dr Eman Almawlawi, family consultant at Omar Bin Khatab Health Centre, Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), yesterday. |
Speaking to Gulf Times in connection with World Family Doctor’s Day, Dr Eman said that a doctor’s job was a very fulfilling one.
“Every doctor is working for the physical and emotional well-being of a community and it should be considered as one of the most satisfying jobs in the world. A doctor works for the society and commands respect from others. This motivates me to work with increased enthusiasm and commitment to start everyday to work for the benefit of the society.”
Dr Eman said: “It is true that there are not many Qataris in this profession. In the earlier days, people took it as a job that needed a lot of years of study as well as a number of years of training and experience to become a reputed professional. People also preferred other jobs that were comparatively light and easy. Many Qataris are interested in jobs that are related to the latest technology and innovations.”
The physician highlighted that the salary and perks of the doctors have gone up considerably and match with any professional in the country. “Earlier, compared to some other sectors, it was not an attractive option when you consider the years of efforts to become a doctor. But things have changed now. All the doctors are getting very good pay and other facilities. This must be another motivation for more students to pursue their career in medicine.”
She pointed out that medicinal topics in the school curriculum should be made easier. “We have to introduce more easy information about the anatomy and general information of the body. This will encourage and inspire more students to join the medical studies once they complete the schooling. Of course, biology and other subjects are taught in schools but the students will become more interested in medicine if these are given in more interesting and easy ways,” she added.
Dr Eman also suggested that there should be more openings for the students. She explained: “We need more medical colleges in the country and the region. This will enable more students to join the medical colleges and the profession. If there are more colleges in the region, it will be easy for the students to pursue their studies in medicine.”
She also said that she was very happy to be a doctor as she was helping many people both Qataris and non- Qataris.
“Such satisfaction is rarely available in many other jobs which is very fulfilling personally. In this health centre, there are more than 20 doctors and only five of us are Qataris. I am happy that I am one of them and able to serve my country and the people,” she added.
