The Ministry of Economy and Commerce is now accepting applications from traders who wish to participate in the electronic raffle draw that will award retail space in the Al Furjan Markets.
Raffle entries will be accepted from today until 8pm on Sunday, 25 May. Applicants are required to register at aswaq.mec.gov.qa
The winning numbers of the Al Furjan Markets draw will be selected at random by an electronic system during a live public event in the presence of a representative from the Consumer Protection Department, as well as the media. The results of the draw will also be published on the Ministry of Economy and Commerce website.
The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning has ensured that the nature of each business within the Al Furjan Markets will be allocated in a manner that ensures that all residents’ needs are met through the provision of a variety of basic goods and services.
The Al Furjan Markets project will consist of 44 markets comprising a total of 645 shops offering 28 commercial activities including supermarkets, hypermarkets, specialist food outlets and delicatessens, hairdressers and barber shops, laundry and plumbing facilities, shoes and clothing stores, toy stores, cafes, florists, chocolatiers, electronic and printing stores, and post offices.
Furthermore, an agreement has been made with Mowasalat (Karwa) to provide taxi stands at all market locations. Additionally, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce has outlined the following application criteria:
Applicants are required to fill in an online form and should have all the required data and information.
Only Qatari companies and individuals can apply. Applicants must possess a valid commercial licence relevant to the type of trade they are applying for (provided information will be cross-checked with the official Ministry of Economy and Commerce records), individuals who register should have a valid commercial registry, individuals who register should be authorised to sign a commercial registry, applicants can apply for more than one commercial activity in accordance with their entitlements registered at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, applicants must provide a QR50,000 bond, from a state endorsed bank, addressed to the Qatar Development Bank – failure to do so will render an application null and void. Bonds must be valid for one year and faxed to the number specified by the committee, following individual submissions all supporting information and documentation will be validated against the Ministry of Economy and Commerce records.
Upon confirmation of validity an SMS message, including a unique raffle number, will be sent to the mobile phone provided on the application. Winners will also be sent an SMS notification requesting them to visit the Ministry of Economy and Commerce where they will be instructed to sign a contract within two weeks of the end of the bid.
Winners have a maximum of two weeks from the date of the raffle draw to sign their lease agreement.
Transfer of shop ownership is strictly prohibited and in the event of violations properties must be returned to the project owner with compensation for incurred losses.
Established in co-operation with the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, the Ministry of Finance, Qatar Chamber and Qatar Development Bank, the Al Furjan Markets will revitalise trade in various communities around Qatar while catering to the needs of local residents. Ultimately, the new developments will alleviate traffic congestions in downtown Doha by reducing the need for residents who live on the city outskirts to make unnecessary trips.
The commercial rent is QR6,000 per store and per month, based on the recommendations of Qatar Chamber.
The Al Furjan Markets project will be established in Doha in the areas of Al Rayyan and Al Dhaayin. Outside the capital, the areas of Qatifa, Hezm Al Markhiyah, Al Eb, Jariayan, Nojaima, Rawdhat Al Hamam, Rawat Al Kadeem, Al Thumaid, Al Miiad and Om Al Saneem will also be included in the project.
