A doctor at Hamad Medical Corporation performed a successful operation lasting around 24 hours that saved the leg of a girl from complete amputation, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported. |
Dr Mostafa al-Khalil, senior consultant and Chief of Surgeries section, said that the girl was sick with carcinoma in the lower leg. In an operation lasting 24 hours, amputation was made to a part of the leg bone with 26cms under the knee. A bone from the healthy leg was transplanted in the place of the amputation.
“The result of the operation was wonderful and complete amputation of the leg was successfully avoided,” Dr al-Khalil said.
He said that his section received around 1,000 to 1,500 patients per month to conduct various types of surgeries in the mouth, head and neck in addition to medication of congenital malformations.
The majority of the cases are for the mouth. He added that the operations requiring restoration or transplantation of organs usually took a long time, which could be 18 hours or more.
