Left fielder Grady Sizemore hit a go-ahead three-run home run with one out in the top of the sixth inning, and Jon Lester pitched effectively into the seventh, as the Boston Red Sox evened their four-game series with a win at Yankee Stadium on Friday.
Right fielder Jonny Gomes also homered for the Red Sox, who had one hit through five innings against New York starter CC Sabathia, while Lester (1-2) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.
The Red Sox were getting stymied by Sabathia (1-2), who even with diminished velocity seemed dominant at least for the first four innings when he breezed through with 44 pitches.
But after some tough at-bats ended with outs in the fifth, Boston managed to get to the left-hander in the sixth inning.
Elsewhere, Los Angeles first baseman Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run home run and drove in five runs and Dodgers left-hander Ryu Hyun-jin held Arizona scoreless for the second time this season in a road victory over the Diamondbacks.
Ryu (2-1) gave up two hits and struck out eight in five innings. He has thrown 12 scoreless innings against Arizona this season after pitching the first five innings of a 7-5 victory in Sydney, Australia, on March 23.
Seattle Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez impressed in his home operner as the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics.
Hernandez tossed seven innings of four-hit ball, striking out 11 along the way, though Oakland (6-4) had a four-run eighth inning to make it interesting after chasing Hernandez from the game.
