Delegation from the Institution of Chemical Engineers with Qatargas officials before a tour of the company’s facilities in Ras Laffan.

Officials and members of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) led by its president, Judith Hackitt, recently toured the facilities of Qatargas 2 (QG2) in Ras Laffan.

The tour, which was facilitated by Qatargas surveillance division manager Ibrahim Bawazir, included safety inductions and a visit to the facility’s main control room as well as a meeting with coaches, mentors, and national graduates.

During the tour, Qatargas chief operating officer Sheikh Khalid bin Abdulla al-Thani (engineering & ventures) lauded the IChemE delegation led by Hackitt, who was in Qatar for the first time.

He also underscored IChemE’s partnership with Qatargas and said, “We are very proud to be a Gold Corporate Partner with IChemE, which gives Qatargas Engineering & Ventures increased recognition as a top employer in the chemical engineering community.”

After touring the QG2 facilities, the delegation also visited the Ras Laffan Emergency and Safety College and Texas A&M University to meet with undergraduates and discuss process safety. Aside from Sheikh Khalid, other Qatargas officials who also accompanied the IChemE delegation included learning and development manager Adnan Hassan al-Shaibi and Qatargas employee Hessa al-Nesf, who became the first Qatari to receive the internationally-recognised qualification of Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

“Qatargas is a Gold Corporate Partner of IChemE and shows its commitment to helping its staff continually develop through maintaining an accredited company training scheme, participation in technical and local events, and professional registration,” Sheikh Khalid said.

He added that “several more Qatargas national graduates have registered with IChemE and are currently on their development paths towards achieving IEng status.”

Founded in 1922, IChemE is a global professional membership organisation for people who have an interest and relevant experience in chemical engineering. Currently, IChemE has around 38,000 members across 120 countries.
