Barwa City in the Mesaimeer area is a self-sufficient community offering 128 buildings with 6,000 residential units.

The construction of all amenities inside Barwa City is complete and units - including the shopping mall, hypermarket, and schools and nurseries - have been handed over to anchor tenants, Barwa announced yesterday.

Barwa City is now 90% occupied and “will become even more vibrant once shops and restaurants are all open”, according to a statement.

LuLu Hypermarket, an anchor tenant in Barwa City, has leased the shopping centre and a multi-purpose hall next to it. LuLu Hypermarket is scheduled to open the shopping centre during the second quarter of 2014.

All the schools and kindergartens within Barwa City are leased by Newton International School. One school and two kindergartens are already operational while the remaining school and two remaining kindergartens are to open in September this year.

The residential city in the Mesaimeer area is a self-sufficient community offering 128  buildings with 6,000 residential units and a capacity to accommodate up to 25,000 residents. Among the many blocks of buildings inside Barwa City, many facilities are divided into East Amenities and West Amenities.

The East Amenity provides a school with capacity of 2,000 students, a shopping centre, a multi-purpose hall, a  mosque (Juma mosque), in addition to two play grounds, one of which contains public toilets. The East Amenity has two different zones located North East & South East of the city, with each zone comprising a mosque and a kindergarten.

The West Amenity has a school with capacity of 2,000 students, a grand mosque that is bigger than the Juma mosque and a commercial complex over two floors, with the first floor housing shops and the second floor serving as a food court.

The West Amenity  provides a bank, a fitness centre and two play grounds, one of them with public toilets. Similar to the East Amenity, there are two zones located North West & South West. The North West zone has a mosque and a kindergarten while the South West zone hosts the two villas which are part of the “Baytna” passivehaus experiment and a kindergarten.

Barwa City has good lighting during the night. All traffic lights around the city are operational except for one which will be activated soon.

The design and the building technologies used in Barwa City follow the concepts of sustainability and advocate causes of safety, security and green living. Barwa City provides the “District Cooling Technology”, in addition to providing access to the natural gas supply lines and optical fibre broadband network. The city has a Sewage Treatment Plant which filters sewage water to re-use it for planting.

Almost all the residential units are now occupied yet leasing requests are still open for unfurnished studio units. The studios are built over 29sqm, perfect for bachelors, employees working nearby or those who are looking to live in a bigger community, with monthly rent of QR2,500 plus utility fees.
